In my book, Parting Ways, I talk about the concept of digital immortality, the use of technology to immortalize an individual with a montage of digital images, video and audio recordings that preserve a life. It’s excellent to see Google using the concept of digitally immortalizing Johnny Cash in an ad campaign for Crome, the Google web browser. In this video ad, we meet fans from all around the world collectively paying tribute to Johnny Cash and creating his final video on the web. I just love the haunting lyrics in this ad sung by Johnny Cash “There ain’t no grave that can hold my body down.” This video/ad played prominently below the masthead on the New York Times website. Bravo to Google! This is an example of an ad geared toward what I refer to in my book as the End-of-Life Revolution when the cultural values of the baby boom shift America’s public consciousness toward rewriting how we live in life’s last chapter, preserving legacy and life stories, collectively sharing tributes and celebrating life.
